Abstract Artwork
If an object or expression can bring about, within us, a sense of serene melancholy and a spiritual longing, then that object could be said to be wabi-sabi. The painting tries to draw that balance through its contrasting colors, smooth and scumbling strokes, and horizontal and vertical application of paint that harmonize when juxtaposed against each other. In Japanese tradition, Wabi- Sabi is the beauty and appreciation of things imperfect and impermanent; accepting the flow of life. Wabi-sabi reminds us that we are all transient beings on this planet—that our bodies, as well as the material world around us, are in the process of returning to dust. It takes a mind quiet enough to appreciate muted beauty, courage not to fear bareness, willingness to accept things as they are—without ornamentation. It depends on the ability to slow down, to shift the balance from doing to being to appreciating rather than perfecting. So together, the two words わび (wabi) and さび (sabi) are a form of yin and yang and often used as one word but actually, they contradict each other, creating a wonderful concept where two opposites work together in harmony for greater and more positive meaning.
