Tingatinga art was first created in Tanzania, East Africa in the 1960’s. It all began with a man called Edward Saidi Tingatinga.
Tingatinga is a painting style that developed in the second half of the 20th century in the Oyster Bay area in Dar es Salaam and later spread to most East Africa.
Tinga tinga is one of the most widely represented forms of tourist-oriented paintings in Tanzania, Kenya and neighboring countries. Tingatinga art was first created in Tanzania in 1960.
Unemployed and desperate to earn some money, Edward Tingatinga decided to try and paint pictures to sell to tourists visiting Tanzania. His style was naïve, bordering on surrealistic and humorous; most of his subjects were stereotypical African icons, such as wildlife or savannah landscapes. The Artist has much indulged herself with the Dotillism technique. The painting is very colorful and vibrant.
